Can someone pleasee explain this quote to me? (10pts available!)?

It basically means that this day could be your last so you should make sure you live life to the fullest because death could be right around the corner. The way I understood it was the nervous shopkeeper mistakes you for a burglar and shoots you or something. That part is not imperative to understanding the quote though.
