35mm film: what happens if I open my camera?

Safelights were low intensity red lights that were only safe when working with black and white photo printing paper. The paper was orthochromatic--it was not sensitive to red light. It would not be safe for working with film. Even black and white film is panchromatic, as sensitive to red light as any other color.
