In the movie Crash, why is the Persian daughter of the shopkeeper relieved to find his gun?

After the store was broken into and much was stolen, she asked her father if they still had the gun (desperately). She then raced over to the drawer and was relieved to find that it was still there. Why was she SO concerned that the gun was still there?
